SRT / VTT converter & subtitle checker

Convert between SRT, WebVTT and plain text, shift every timestamp by the same amount, and get a plain-language report on what is broken. Free, in your browser, no upload.

Supports SRT (00:00:01,000), WebVTT (00:00:01.000), and plain TXT with no timings.
Positive = captions appear later. Negative = earlier. Times below zero are clamped to 00:00:00,000. Shift applies to SRT and VTT output; TXT has no timings.

What this tool fixes

Caption files fail in a handful of predictable ways: a missing number throws the whole file out of sequence, a stray comma instead of a period breaks a WebVTT parser, or a whole file is half a second late because the audio was trimmed before it was transcribed. This page handles those three jobs in one place.

Conversion keeps cue text exactly as written — it does not re-flow lines, translate, or change punctuation. If you need the words without any timing at all, choose TXT; if you need a clean transcript for notes or an article, the Transcript Cleaner is built for that.

Why is my caption file half a second off?

Usually because the audio was trimmed, a lead-in was removed, or the player adds a small preroll. Rather than editing dozens of cues by hand, enter the offset once here and export a new file.

SRT and VTT look almost identical. What actually changes?

VTT needs a WEBVTT header line and uses a period before milliseconds; SRT has no header and uses a comma. VTT also allows cue identifiers and settings after the timestamp. This tool writes clean, widely-compatible output of both.

Does the checker modify my file?

No. It only reports. The conversion above is the only thing that produces new text.
